Is Reiki for you?
Reiki is a collaborative healing method. I cannot do much more than make you feel like you’ve just had a relaxing massage unless you are willing to; not only open up and receive the healing, but accept and work with what comes through during the session. Sometimes people will look to reiki for a quick fix, and for acute issues like a nasty virus, relief in one session is very possible. However, if you are dealing with a chronic situation, one or two sessions will usually uncover the deeper cause of your pain, and begin to bring it to light. That is not to say that you won’t feel relief after one session, you will almost always feel better after each session. Unfortunately, many people will postpone and procrastinate their healing until they are in an unacceptable amount of pain. Whether it stems from a lack of self worth, or the belief that masking symptoms is actual healing, putting your true well-being on the side burner is a problem, no matter the reason. The good news is, there is no problem that you cannot come back from. I’ll say that again, THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN DEFEAT YOU… IF you are committed to healing. We are glorious, divine beings with unlimited potential, but personal accountability and a true desire for healing are fundamentally necessary. That begs the question; Do you want to heal? Most people will say “of course I want to heal” without really thinking about it. You have to want to heal more than anything. You have to put yourself first. You have to leave the excuses at the door. You must be willing to honestly look at the situations that got you here with an open heart. So many causes of pain are unknowingly self inflicted - that fact is a tough thing for some people to accept. Childhood trauma, for example, isn’t something you would think you are responsible for. You weren’t the aggressor, you were a child, you didn’t ask to be abused. Holding onto that pain, refusing to forgive, and making it part of who you are, is a choice that will only cause more suffering. In every situation in our lives we get to choose how we will respond. We can choose to look at situations as they are - learn and become stronger, or - we can blame and fixate on who is at fault, and sink deeper into suffering. The state of victimhood is not a place you want to live. Allowing yourself to be a permanent victim will ultimately keep you in a state of suffering, no matter how justified you feel.
The process of healing is almost always difficult, and requires dedication. You may become frustrated and angry at what comes up. You may want to give up, take an aspirin and just “get over it”. Strong will is an asset, and can help you immensely in your healing process, but stubbornly refusing to accept your reality and be responsible for yourself will only create more suffering. Self love and acceptance is the only path to wellness, everything else is an illusion.

Forgiveness is a major part of healing. You must forgive those who have hurt you, and you must forgive yourself for pain you’ve caused, as well as the situations that you’ve allowed yourself to be in. Actual forgiveness is more than a statement, you can say you forgive someone, but until you really feel it, you will be controlled by the shame that hides in the state of victimhood.
I don’t think that anyone believes that their abuser came out of the womb as an evil tormentor. It can help you, as you move through the process of healing, to remember that everyone has an origin story. You are probably not completely innocent, in this regard, and have most likely inflicted pain onto someone else at some point in your life. Forgive yourself, forgive others, life is learning. The only tragedy of failure is when there is no learning, without the lesson… failing (imperfections) will always feel like loss.
The beautiful thing about being human is that we get to be whatever we want, the sky’s the limit! But, to be who we want to be, we must let go of who we were. No excuses, no regrets!
Finally, Reiki works well along side other methods of healing. I believe you should use everything at your disposal, that you believe will be effective, to live a fulfilling and joyful life. You are a magical being with the power to heal yourself; there have been too many studies done, involving the placebo effect to deny that. With that said; if you are approaching reiki healing just to try it, without a belief that it will be effective, it would probably be best for you to try a more conventional healing modality.
